All brand-name drugs are developed under a patent, which grants the manufacturer exclusive rights to sell the drug during the patent’s term. The manufacturer of the brand-name drugs usually charges higher prices in order to recover the costs of developing the drug, which consist of marketing, promotion, research, etc. Once the patent comes to an end, it licenses other pharmaceutical manufacturers to create and sell the generic equivalents. Other Pharmaceutical manufacturers do not have to spend time and money on developing the drug, hence the cost is affordable.

The main differences are the drug's name and the price. Manufacturers give brand names for marketing, while generic drugs are sold under their chemical names. Therefore, generics offer the same effectiveness as brand-name drugs, providing identical active ingredients and medicinal properties.

  1.  Why are generic medicines cheaper compared to brand ones?

The lower cost of generic medicines is due to their manufacturing process. Companies focused on generics typically don't invest in research, development, advertising, or marketing.
